GMAT Math Tips

As Sisyphus Runs recently posted, acing the GMAT is top of mind for many applicants these days. In a recent Businessweek.com article, Lawrence Rudner, VP for research and development at the GMAC says, “We’re assuming most people are coming to the plate with basic math skills. If you’re coming in really weak at math you do need to brush up.”

The article includes the following tips from GMAT prep experts for getting your math game back:

*Practice with puzzles - you’ll exercise the math part of your brain with more fun than just prep questions

*Do mental games - chess or similar games require you to use strategic problem solving like the GMAT

*Take a course - Manhattan GMAT offers a new Foundations of Math. “We realized that a portion of our students were having some trouble and missing the basic skills you need for the GMAT,” says Chris Ryan, director of product and instructor development at Manhattan GMAT about creating the course. “You have to suck up and say: ‘This is what the GMAT requires of me, and the last time I saw this stuff I had a locker.’”

*Back to campus - taking a course at a local community college can help beef up your math skills for the GMAT and demonstrate your quantitative abilities to schools

*Take it slow - start with the easier questions first and get your math confidence back
