Oxford Launches New Law, Finance Degree

The University of Oxford‘s Said Business School has announced the launch of a new law and finance masters program, taught in conjunction with the Law Faculty, which will begin in October 2010.

Led by Lovells professor of law and finance John Armour, the course will be split into three elements: finance (with modules based on the Said Business School MBA program); legal (taught by Oxford law faculty staff); and the law and economics of corporate transactions (a combined course jointly designed and taught by Said and Oxford law faculty staff).

The program is designed to equip lawyers with a thorough grounding in finance, to support their careers in law firms, financial institutions, government or business.  It will support and lead the integration of law and finance, a new field which holds much significance for the future.

“The Oxford Master’s in Law and Finance will act as a launch-pad for a successful career in law, regulation, or academic finance,” explained Professor Armour in a statement announcing the news.

The Master’s in Law and Finance will bring together legal practitioners, financial experts, economists, and academics, both as students of the program and in delivering the program. It will also use practical case studies that have been developed in partnership with industry participants.

The deadline for applications for the 30 places on the course is January 22, 2010, with offers scheduled to be made in March. To be considered, applicants must have at least an LLB degree, Graduate Diploma in Law qualification or its international equivalent.

According to course administrator Kate Blanshard, applications received so far have been from a mixture of international students, recent graduates and law firm associates with varying amounts of experience.

The cost for the nine-month, full-time program is approximately £21,000 ($34,000).
