MBA Outlook Across the Pond

Research indicates that demand for management education in Europe is particularly strong, says Dave Wilson, president and chief executive of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), in The Times Wednesday. “In fact, Europe was the only region where more full-time MBA programs reported a rise in application volume last year compared with the previous year.”

Signs of Strength

  • The number of Europeans taking the GMAT rose 30% between 2005 and 2009.
  • GMAC calls the European job market for MBA graduates solid, with three quarters of those earning a degree in 2009 finding a job within a few months of graduating.
  • Conrad Chua, head of MBA recruitment and admissions at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, says applications are up, particularly from North Americans looking to broaden their international exposure.
  • Maria de Carlos of IE Business School in Madrid also reports an increase in MBA applications, and says the economic situation is an opportunity for students to upgrade their management skills, recycle their knowledge and develop networks, as well as jump start their own businesses.

Timing, as they say, is everything. Those poised to enter an MBA program this or next year stand a good shot of reentering the job market on much firmer footing than those graduating in 2009.
