Tough Times Mean Deans Have Their Work Cut Out For Them

From a summary of the challenges deans at top schools face, to the work specifically that Edward Snyder will tackle when his deanship begins at Yale School of Management, the Wall Street Journal provided excellent coverage this week of the state of business education.

According to the WSJ, these three deans face the following challenges:

Rich Lyons, University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business
Challenge: Raising $120 million by 2014.

“In the wake of the recession, Mr. Lyons says he’s had luck with small gifts, but he’s gunning for big ticket donations, starting at $1 million and stretching to eight figures.”

Blair Sheppard, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business
Challenge: Opening campuses in India, the United Arab Emirates and China.

Building Duke-branded campuses across the globe has created a ripple of challenges for Mr. Sheppard. “We’ve had to start everything from the ground level,” Mr. Sheppard says.

George Daly, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business
Challenge: Weaning students off traditional MBA careers””and onto Washington.

“The business school hasn’t done much outreach to the employers in its own backyard. Mr. Daly says he’ll need to build personal relationships with D.C.-area companies and government-related firms””both of which have had jobs to offer in the last year.”

In a more detailed look at Edward Snyder’s upcoming appointment at Yale School of Management,WSJ calls it the most challenging of his career due to the fact that SOM, while well-regarded, has fewer brand-name faculty and lacks the history and size of many elite programs.

“He’ll face the challenge of attracting higher caliber recruiters to campus and finding donors to fund new projects at the school, without the benefit of many big-name or deep-pocketed alumni,” writes WSJ reporter Diana Middleton.

Both of this stories provide excellent insight into the challenges and opportunities facing B-schools during this period of economic uncertainty. For the complete picture, please click on the links to the original articles.
