Vanderbilt MBAs Create Targeted Travel Website

As campus recruiting opportunities shrink, more MBAs look toward entrepreneurship as a way to get ahead. Students from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University have come up with a novel business venture to help their peers: My College Road Trip. The student-designed Website, profiled in the university’s newspaper Inside Vandy, helps students plan spring break and other road trips. Written exclusively by Vanderbilt students, the site highlights activities, restaurants and bars that those crazy college-aged kids like.

My College Road Trip (MCRT) is the brainchild of Andrew Bouldin, who was frustrated by the lack of travel information on the Web geared specifically to college students. While driving home from a weekend road trip, Bouldin says “I realized that there was no way to find out the coolest things for college students to do around my college on any given weekend.”

The online business is managed and maintained by the Owen grad students who launched the site, as well as undergrads in an advanced marketing class. Graduate students involved in the project will be able to use their experience in forming an online business toward their business degrees, the article says.

Owen made a significant jump in the recent Financial Times business school rankings, and dean Jim Bradford credits the move to the students’ eagerness to start their own businesses. The Owen Graduate School of Management shot up 20 places in the world rankings and is now ranked the 56th best business school in the world. It also jumped 15 spots in the U.S. business school rankings and is now ranked as the 28th-best business school in the United States.
