A Step Forward for Greater Diversity

The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, a national not-for-profit and premier organization for diversity and inclusion in American business, has announced the addition of the Yale School of Management to its list of prestigious member schools. The mission of The Consortium is to enhance diversity in business education and leadership by helping to reduce the serious underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans in both member schools’ enrollment and the ranks of management.

In conjunction with member schools, sponsoring companies, and an elite group of MBA students and alumni, The Consortium has built a forty-two year legacy of fostering inclusion and changing the ethnic and cultural face of American business. With annual awards exceeding $11 million in full-tuition, merit based MBA fellowships, The Consortium has played an integral role in assisting more than 5,500 minority students earn their MBAs and advance their careers in corporate America.

“We are thrilled to partner with Yale School of Management,” says Peter J. Aranda, III, Executive Director and CEO of The Consortium, in an announcement posted on the school’s website. “Including Yale School of Management among our member schools enhances our goal of providing opportunities for deserving students to attend top-ranked educational institutions. Having Consortium students at Yale School of Management broadens our reach and strengthens our mission to promote diversity in American business schools and corporations.”

The Consortium will begin recruiting prospective MBA students for Yale School of Management in the fall of 2008, with the first class graduating in the spring of 2011. As a new member of The Consortium, Yale School of Management joins thirteen other top business schools including Carnegie Mellon University, Dartmouth College, Emory University, Indiana University, University of Michigan, New York University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Rochester, The University of Southern California, The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Virginia, Washington University in St. Louis and University of Wisconsin–Madison.

The newly formed alliance has generated excitement on the Yale campus and within The Consortium community. “Partnering with The Consortium is a logical step in demonstrating an essential aspect of our own institutional mission of educating leaders for business and society,” says Joel M. Podolny, Dean of the Yale School of Management. “By linking our mission with that of The Consortium, both of our institutions are stronger. In addition, we look forward to working with our colleagues at the other member schools to create ever expanding opportunities for Consortium scholars.”

The Consortium’s vice chairman of the Board of Trustees, James Holmen — Director of Admissions and Financial Aid for Indiana University’s MBA program — is enthusiastic about the potential benefits of the affiliation. “This valuable partnership will enhance the experience and expand the professional network of Consortium students at all of our member schools. We look forward to a rewarding collaboration with our newest member.”
