With the recent turmoil in the financial markets and a push for more accountability, risk management has rocketed in status at business schools, BusinessWeek reports.

Maurice A. Harris, assistant professor of finance in the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, has been appointed the new associate dean for MBA & MS Programs in the Whitman School as of July 1, 2008.

In other faculty news, Melanie Barnett, MBA ’91, executive director and member of the senior management team at the Ross School of Business Executive Education Program, recently was appointed to the department’s chief executive position following a national search.

An event co-sponsored by INSEAD last month in Abu Dhabi stressed that future government leaders and senior business executives urgently need to adopt a more inclusive attitude towards women and to value their role in the workplace.

Financial Times addressed the a different sort of military surge this week; schools in the U.S. report a sharp rise in MBA applications from service personnel leaving the military and looking to switch careers.

Economist.com reports that Harvard Business School has produced a case study of India’s dabbawalas, urging its students to learn from the organization, which relies entirely on human endeavor and employs no technology.
