New Energy Institute at Haas

UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business has created a new energy institute to tap the growing student interest in green tech, bringing together research on clean-energy technology, policy and economics, the school announced last week.

The Energy Institute at Haas melds pieces of the UC Energy Institute, known for its research into energy economics, and Haas’ Center for Energy and Environmental Innovation, which offers classes in topics such as energy-project financing. The new institute has a broad mission, from commercializing new technologies to teaching students how energy markets work.

“Sustainable energy is an area of tremendous growth and opportunity; it is also an area in need of new technologies and business models,” says Haas School dean Rich Lyons.

“Our Haas School has long provided deep competency in this area — our depth and breadth are unsurpassed at any other business school. We’re proud to expand even further with our new Energy Institute at Haas.”

The institute’s activities will include several energy-related courses; the Cleantech to Market (C2M) partnership between graduate students and scientists to bring clean energy technologies to market; and the already-established POWER Conference and the Policy Conference, which bring together researchers and industry representatives.

The Haas School will celebrate the creation of its Energy Institute with a launch event on October 30.
