B-School Buzz: Tips on Networking, Financing Your MBA, and Surviving Life’s Curveballs

Welcome back to another edition of Stacy Blackman’s B-school Buzz! Whether it’s networking tips, personal advice or thoughts on how to finance your MBA , our bloggers share insights that can help all would-be applicants.

The 8 elements of effective networking — Everyone knows that a huge part of the b-school experience is creating a network that you’ll be tapping into for the rest of your career. A guest post on creating a professional network featured on the MBAChic blog explains the right and wrong way to do it, and offers tips on how to develop your soft skills and network effectively.

Financing your MBA — Working off of the student budget recently released by Harvard Business School, the Military to Business blog lists several different benefits, fellowships and scholarships those currently serving in the armed forces might tap into to pay for school. Non-military applicants should read over this entry as well; believe it or not, there are resources out there that can help you pay for your MBA.

Surviving unemployment and illness — Not everyone has a smooth path in life; in fact, most of us have faced stumbling blocks on our personal road toward success. That’s why this post on the Random Wok blog is so important. While Mark is headed to UCLA Anderson School of Management this fall, his situation wasn’t always rosy. Read his advice on surviving two of life’s greatest setbacks when they hit simultaneously.

Shopping at the mall is like shopping for an MBASanket has drafted an interesting analogy between a shopping trip to the mall and the b-school research and selection process. Whether it’s a perfume allergy or a school’s culture, knowing yourself and how you might be drawn or repelled by certain things is critical. I particularly agree with one of his statements, which is not to choose schools based solely on your comfort zone; leave some room to challenge yourself.
