Stacy Blackman’s B-School Buzz

This week, our Buzz bloggers face down the dog days of summer with some thoughts on school-life balance, professionalism, and how a popular science-fiction flick can help channel your MBA dreams.

Mixing b-school and family — Many b-school applicants who are married, possibly also with children, wonder how they will juggle the pressure cooker atmosphere of an MBA program with their personal and family commitments. This recent post on the Military to Business blog looks at what you can do pre-matriculation and while at school to make the transition go more smoothly.

Professionalism…why it matters –It’s not an MBA core class but it easily could be, says MBAChic, as professionalism can make or break your career. The issue goes beyond business etiquette, she says, explaining that “Business etiquette is what; professionalism is how.”

“Inception” and your MBA dreams — Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi blockbuster film Inception is the inspiration for Sanket‘s latest project to help him realize his business school dreams. “I need to create my world, a world in which my mind gets 24 x 7 inputs about my dreams, every moment it starts thinking about achieving that dream,” he writes. We’re very curious to see how this cerebral experiment plays out in his MBA journey.

The post-acceptance slump — We can’t say he didn’t warn us. Headed to UCLA Anderson in the fall, Random Wok foreshadowed his reduced presence in the blogosphere when he predicted the difficulties of blogging as an MBA student. After spending a few weeks pondering the future of his site, he has come up with a slow and steady plan to make Random Wok a resource for both MBA applicants and students.
