The Future of Healthcare Leadership at Kellogg
Northwestern Medicine and the Kellogg School of Management recently announced the launch of the Northwestern Medicine Kellogg Healthcare Leadership Center, fueled by a $10 million endowment. This collaboration aims to shake up the healthcare leadership space and become the training ground for the next generation of leaders working to bridge the gap between healthcare and business.
The center will foster leadership through hands-on training, cutting-edge research, and innovative approaches to tackling today’s healthcare challenges. As Kellogg Dean Francesca Cornelli noted, “By bridging business acumen with healthcare expertise, we are poised to redefine leadership in care delivery.” She emphasized that Kellogg is laser-focused on making a lasting impact in classrooms, clinics, and the entire healthcare ecosystem.
Here’s a breakdown of what the center will offer:
Real-World Experience
MBA students will have the unique opportunity to work in the heart of the healthcare system. They will immerse themselves in the daily operations of clinics, hospitals, and administrative settings. This isn’t just theory—it’s about gaining real-world experience in improving business strategy and operations where it matters most: with patients. This hands-on experience will prepare them for the challenges of the healthcare leadership space.
Leadership Development
As the healthcare industry evolves, the center aims to develop decision-makers who understand both healthcare and business. This is a boot camp for future CEOs and innovators who can handle the unique challenges of healthcare systems.
Research and Innovation
The center will also drive research that informs its teaching and leadership development programs, creating a feedback loop of shared knowledge, collaboration, and breakthrough ideas.
The healthcare sector is enormous, representing a staggering $4.3 trillion (17.1% of the U.S. economy) and undergoing massive change. As Howard Chrisman, MD, president and CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, explained, “This center will have a positive impact on future leaders that goes beyond the clinical setting and will have a lasting impact on the communities we serve.”
In a world where healthcare systems are grappling with new competitors and advancing technologies, the Northwestern Medicine Kellogg Healthcare Leadership Center is stepping in to ensure that tomorrow’s leaders are ready to take on the challenges of patient care and beyond.
New Certificate Program in Healthcare Leadership
Kellogg School has also launched a new Certificate in the Business of Healthcare for full- and part-time MBA students to equip future leaders with a 360-degree understanding of the healthcare industry. Building on a similar certificate offered to EMBA students, this program allows students to gain deep knowledge of the healthcare ecosystem while tailoring their coursework to their specific career goals.

The program requires at least four healthcare-specific credits, including courses like Healthcare Strategy, available in a 10-week format or an immersive weekend Deep Dive. Students must also complete two additional industry-specific credits and one experiential learning credit. The program exposes students to industry leaders through guest speakers and networking opportunities.
Kellogg’s healthcare curriculum offers various pathways for students to explore healthcare strategy and entrepreneurship. Students can engage with the industry through the school’s Healthcare Club, conferences, case competitions, and speaker series. With an extensive alumni network in healthcare leadership roles, the program offers students valuable industry connections and a competitive edge.
The certificate is available to students in most Kellogg MBA programs, except for MBAi students. Learn more about Healthcare at Kellogg here.
