Seth Godin’s Alternative MBA

Seth Godin, entrepreneur extraordinaire and best-selling author of business books galore, wants to make you an offer. Don’t get an MBA–spend six months in his office instead. It’s an “apprenticeship/not-internship/graduate school/charm school track-changing opportunity.” Yes, apprenticeship slash grad school, and not the other way around.

“If you’re stuck in a dead end job in publishing, or if you made a not-so-great choice in getting your career started, or if you thought Wall Street would be a different place, or if you just got laid off, or if you’re not crazy about fretting away the next six months waiting to get fired and you’re not quite ready to start your own gig… this might be the turbolift you were hoping for,” says Godin. “Yes, it’s free.”

Godin’s proposal should motivate entrepreneurial path changers, and with the current economic slump, his timing couldn’t be better. Over at the BusinessWeek forums, scores of people have already weighed in on the legitimacy/value of his offer, and responses cross the spectrum from skeptical to sycophantic.

The program starts January 19, 2009, and applications are due by December 14th.

What do you think? Is this a valid alternative to an MBA, or Godin’s clever way to attract free labor?
