Booth’s Dean Synder Moves On to Yale SOM

Barely a month has passed since Edward Snyder announced his plans to step down in June as dean of the Chicago Booth School of Business and the news came yesterday that Yale School of Management has scooped him up. Following a year’s leave, Snyder will assume the deanship of Yale SOM in July of 2011.

The move follows nearly 10 years at Booth, where he energized the student body and alumni, nearly doubled the number of tenured professors, boosted the school’s endowment and ushered in a $300 million gift from the school’s namesake, investment bank CEO David Booth, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Jim Baron, chair of Yale’s faculty search committee, told WSJ he began the search by phoning 30 deans in the United States and 15 abroad, but Snyder’s name is the only one he heard more than once.

“Ted Snyder is widely regarded as the most successful business school dean in the nation,” Yale president Richard C. Levin said in a statement announcing the news.

“He brings experience, enthusiasm, and vision to the Yale School of Management, and he looks forward to maintaining the school’s tradition of preparing students for leadership in business and society by raising their awareness of the context in which business operates.

Ted especially appreciates Yale’s openness to collaboration across its schools and departments and its strong institutional commitment to infusing its educational programs with global experiences and global awareness. Ted is also committed to advancing the curricular innovations begun by the SOM faculty three years ago.”

Despite his successes at Booth, none of the dozen SOM students interviewed Wednesday by the Yale Daily News said they knew of Snyder prior to the announcement of his appointment. While impressed with Snyder’s credentials, many said they were concerned for the future of SOM under Snyder, given the school’s relatively small size and focus on work in the public sector ”” features that differentiate SOM from Booth.

SOM professor Roger Ibbotson believes Snyder’s arrival in New Haven will bring long-awaited stability to SOM, while interim dean Sharon Oster said she expects Snyder to stay for 10 years or more.

“We’ve had a somewhat rocky history but I think everything is settling down now, and we’re actually in great shape to go forward,” Ibbotson said.
