Update on Yale SOM Dean Search

Five months into the search process for a new dean at the Yale School of Management, administrators have narrowed the field of potential candidates, Yale Daily News reported Friday.

The faculty search committee tasked with replacing dean Sharon Oster ”” who stepped up after the October 2008 departure of former dean Joel Podolny ”” should reach a shortlist within the next month or so, university president Richard Levin said in the article, adding that he hopes to name a successor to Oster by the end of calendar year 2009.

Whomever is chosen, the new dean will have plenty to do; he or she will need to oversee construction of the school’s new campus and strengthen the SOM’s reputation to match the university’s.

“As SOM tries to enhance its global footprint, [it] won’t happen in a significant way unless SOM leverages everything else in the University,” says Management professor James Baron, who heads the faculty search committee.
