The New Global MBA At Carey

As the Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University prepares to launch its new Global MBA Program in August, management educators everywhere will be watching how the school’s inaugural dean, Yash Gupta, attempts to reinvent the modern MBA.

“Since we are the new kids, we don’t have to change culture; we are building a culture,” Gupta tells BusinessWeek. “We are trying to change the mold.”

The new Carey curriculum will capitalize on Johns Hopkins’ strength in fields like medicine and public health, have a focus on emerging markets and ethics, and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. According to the school’s website, this program will cover the essential subjects of business education but with an innovative academic structure and a philosophy of producing students who want to profit society as well as turn a profit.

To recruit students, BW reports that Gupta embarked an international media tour, tapped into Hopkins’ overseas clubs and alumni groups, and participated in MBA tours. This year, 500 students applied for the school’s 80 spots, Gupta says. Half of the school’s diverse inaugural class is international and””almost unheard-of among full-time MBA programs””half the class is female.

But starting a B-school from scratch comes with a multitude of challenges, including obtaining accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and luring in top faculty to a school with no track record. Follow the BW link above for more on this endeavor, and learn more about the Global MBA program here.
