Leadership Training at Tuck
The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College recently announced the start of its Center for Leadership, expanding upon a program founded in 2003. The Center will combine activities, curriculum requirements, academic research and professional forums to help MBA students develop their leadership qualities.
The launch comes as a new ethics requirement begins for Tuck’s incoming class. The timing seems particularly appropriate, however, given the claims of dubious ethical behavior among CEOs in the financial crisis.
As part of a new core course on personal leadership, students will create a plan for themselves, which will be revised and given depth throughout the two-year program. Using feedback from former co-workers and peers, students determine their leadership strengths and areas for improvement. The goal is to give them a fuller picture of their skills instead of simply analyzing traits of effective or ineffective leaders through case studies.
Professor Pino Audia, founder and faculty director of the new Center, says, “While most leadership teaching in business schools is still done through the case method, the center at Tuck will embrace a personalized approach to leadership where the lens shifts from other leaders onto the students themselves.”
