University of Chicago Opens Center in Beijing

Earlier this month, the University of Chicago established a permanent presence in China with the opening of its University of Chicago Center in Beijing.   This makes the university’s fourth permanent foreign location, along with the Paris Center and Chicago Booth’s Singapore and London campuses.

The Center aims to promote scholarship through three broad programs: business, economics and policy; science, medicine and public health; and culture, society and the arts. It represents the University’s long-term commitment to build relationships in China and to foster research and education.

Workshops, lectures and conferences at the Center will provide a platform for generating dialogue between University of Chicago scholars and Chinese policy makers, scholars and business leaders on such topics as human capital and economic development, trade and foreign exchange policy, environmental regulation, health and social policy, and effective business practices.

Through Chicago Booth, the Center will provide opportunities to engage alumni and the broader community through major conferences such as the Management Conference, the Global Leadership Series, and Business Forecast Events. It will also support activities related to the Polsky Center’s Global New Venture Challenge and Venture Capital Industry Competition.

“We hope to create a new intellectual destination here in Beijing, a place where scholars and students gather and constantly test their ideas, with the goals of better mutual understanding and the development of new ideas that will serve people around the world,” says Chicago University president Robert J. Zimmer.
