B-Schooled Podcast Episode #288: From Private Equity to Purpose: A Kellogg MBA’s Road to Baltimore

B-Schooled

In this episode of B-Schooled: Paths Less Traveled, Stacy sits down with her Penn and Kellogg classmate to hear a story about what the MBA makes possible when you stop looking for the straight line.

Michael Rosenband’s post-MBA career reads like a case study in trusting your gut over your resume. Mattel. A dot-com startup. The family business. Private equity at Cerberus Capital. Then the 2008 financial crisis closed that chapter, and his wife suggested he do something he actually loved: work with young people.

He sent 10 letters to high schools asking to volunteer as a football coach. One wrote back.

That single response led to a volunteer gig in the South Bronx, then a cold move to Baltimore on a hunch and a phone call to a Kellogg classmate, then a head baseball coaching job at a vocational high school with no budget, no field, and players who had never held a bat.

Michael Rosenband headshot What followed became much bigger than baseball. His players became problem-solvers. They bought a van, made it to the Sweet 16, won two city championships, and then asked a harder question: why, after all this, were they still not getting jobs?

One captain looked at the 10 vacant houses across from the school and said: Let’s acquire those, apply our trades, and build the experience the industry says we’re missing.

That idea became Requity Foundation, launched in 2020. Today, Requity has engaged 250 students in paid workforce pathways across construction, culinary, media, and business, and its graduates are averaging $48,000 annually, compared with the $14,000 typical of Baltimore City vocational program outcomes.

“Kellogg attracts similar kinds of people. There was just a common decency and a shared desire to contribute,” Michael says. “It’s not about what you can get out of it, but what you can put into it. The lifelong friends, the professors, the mindset it creates about how you approach problems in the world. I can’t say enough about what a life-changing experience it was.”

Equal parts funny and inspiring, with some genuine wisdom on what the MBA can unlock. Listen here, or wherever you get your podcasts.
