Showing Gratitude This Thanksgiving
Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, a moment when millions pause to reflect on what they’re grateful for. For MBA applicants, this season hits a little differently—you’re balancing gratitude with nerves, anticipation, and more inbox-refreshing than anyone wants to admit. It’s a natural point in the year to look back on how far you’ve come and acknowledge the people who helped you get here.
If you applied in Round 1, you’re approaching the end of a long runway of work, introspection, edits, rewrites, and late-night decision-making. Before final decisions come out, it’s worth circling back to the people who supported you throughout that process. Sure, you’ll update them once you know where you’ve landed. But thanking people now—without tying your appreciation to an admit—shows intention, maturity, and genuine gratitude.
Think back to when you first downloaded your applications. Make a quick list of everyone who played a role in helping you feel confident when you hit “submit.” Your recommenders. Friends and family who proofread your materials or listened to your practice answers. Co-workers who cheered you on. Managers who shifted workloads. Roommates who overheard your interview prep through the wall. Anyone who made the journey lighter will appreciate even a brief note of thanks.
If you’re interviewing around this time, keep up the habit of sending a short thank-you email or letter the same day you speak with your interviewer. And don’t stress if you don’t hear anything back—many programs have strict no-response policies until after final decisions are released. Silence is not a signal about your candidacy.
If you’re focused on Round 2 deadlines, Thanksgiving can be a meaningful pause for you, too. It’s still a great moment to thank the people who are supporting you now—especially your recommenders, who may be taking time away from their families and their own much-needed downtime over the holidays to help you move your application forward. A sincere thank-you during this stretch goes a long way.
