B-Schooled Podcast Episode #305: How to Edit Your MBA Essays Down to Size
Every MBA applicant eventually hits the same wall. The essay says everything you want it to say, and it’s 150 words over the limit. On this week’s B-Schooled, host Erika Olson, a Harvard MBA and self-described editing nerd, explains how to get your MBA essays under the word count without cutting anything that matters.
Her first piece of advice may surprise you. Before you touch a single sentence, take a hard look at the stories you’ve chosen. If the setup alone eats a big share of your word count, the example itself may be the problem, and no amount of trimming will fix it.
From there, Erika gets into the line-level habits that pad an essay. She covers the adjectives admissions committees see in nearly every application, the adverbs a sharper verb can replace, and one tiny, common word she hunts down in her own writing every time. Each cut saves only a word or two. Across a 300-word essay, those savings can add up to dozens.
She also tackles bigger problems that cost applicants both space and credibility, including a mistake she sees in “why this school” answers that almost anyone could have written. She also answers the question applicants ask her constantly: do you really have to stay under the word count, or can you fudge it a little?
