B-Schooled Podcast Episode #306: Chicago Booth’s New MBA Application

B-Schooled

For more than a decade, Chicago Booth’s application followed a familiar pattern: two long-form essays, one professional and one personal. This season, the school scrapped them. Applicants to the Class of 2029 now answer four short prompts, each capped at 300 characters, leaving room for two or three sentences.

On this week’s B-Schooled, host Erika Olson sits down with SBC consultant Kim, who spent three years as a Senior Associate Director of Admissions at Booth and read thousands of applications as a member of the admissions committee. Together they unpack what changed, why Booth likely made the move, and how to approach each of the new prompts.

Kim starts with the big picture. Booth still wants intellectually curious, self-directed people who’ll lean into the school’s famously supportive community. The new format asks you to show all of that in very little space. Her central piece of advice is to stop treating the four answers as separate questions. With 1,200 characters in total, they need to work together as a single portfolio.

From there, Kim walks through the career goals prompts, the new photo question, and the fun fact. She names the photo and fun fact choices she’d steer clients away from and shares a simple dinner-table test for spotting a good fun fact. She also explains why her view of Booth’s optional essay has shifted this year, and what the reapplicant prompt asks that many applicants overlook.

If Chicago Booth is on your list this season, this conversation with a former insider is well worth your time. And if the 300-character limit has you worried, pair it with last week’s episode on editing MBA essays for some space-saving strategies.
