B-Schooled Podcast Episode #295: Ann Hsing on Finance, Food, and the Nonlinear MBA Path

Paths Less Traveled, a B-Schooled podcast series from Stacy Blackman Consulting
Some MBA careers move in a straight line. Ann Hsing’s looks more like a treasure map. On this episode of B-Schooled, part of our Paths Less Traveled series, Stacy Blackman sits down with the Kellogg grad whose resume zigs and zags: an MIT economics degree, a bubble tea shop in Boston, strategy consulting, an MBA, a trading desk at Credit Suisse, and finally the restaurant world, where she’s now CEO of two of LA’s most talked-about restaurants, Pasjoli and Seline.

What ties it all together isn’t a master plan. It’s a willingness to chase what genuinely interests her, and to take a few steps backward when the long game calls for it. Ann talks candidly about walking away from a lucrative finance role once the work stopped feeling fulfilling, and about starting over as an intern at Chicago’s Alinea Group at 33, with no restaurant experience, just to learn the industry from the inside.

Stacy and Ann also dig into the parts of business school that paid off in unexpected ways. Not the analytics Ann assumed she’d lean on, but the people and management skills she now wishes she’d studied harder.

These days, she runs a book club for her managers and builds the kind of work culture most restaurants never prioritize. The Kellogg network shows up too, in a great story involving cheesecake, a healthcare bill, and one very well-timed email.

There’s a fun LA twist as well: Pasjoli served as a training ground for the actors of The Bear. If you’ve ever worried your career has to look like everyone else’s, Ann is proof it doesn’t.
