B-Schooled Podcast Episode #297: Why Do You Need an MBA?

Most MBA applications never ask the question outright. That’s exactly why it trips people up. In this episode of B-Schooled, host Erika Olson makes the case that “why do you need an MBA” is the thread running underneath your entire application, whether or not a prompt asks for it.

And there’s a real difference between wanting an MBA and needing one. Admissions committees want candidates they can actually help. If you sell yourself as someone who already has it all figured out, you’ve handed them a reason to give your spot to someone else.

Erika walks through four applicant profiles where this matters most: the consultants and bankers for whom business school is simply the expected next step, candidates with multiple advanced degrees who risk reading as degree collectors, experience outliers on either the young or the seasoned end of the pool, and applicants whose track records are so strong that AdCom wonders what they’d even gain from the program. Each one raises a different quiet objection in a reader’s mind, and Erika explains what that objection actually is.

From there, she sorts the reasons that hold up on the page from the ones that don’t, including a few that are entirely honest and still shouldn’t go anywhere near your essays. The dividing line is less about the reason itself than about what you attach it to.

Erika’s parting advice may be the most counterintuitive: don’t be afraid to name your gaps. If you’re already perfect, what exactly would they teach you?
