B-Schooled Podcast Episode #308: Lisa Tretler on Straying From the Pack

B-Schooled

Lisa Tretler left strategy consulting to earn her MBA at Wharton, then went right back to consulting after graduation. Plenty of people would call that a wasted degree. Lisa makes the opposite case, and her career since then, as an entrepreneur, educator, and founder of a career advisory firm, backs her up.

On this Paths Less Traveled episode of B-Schooled, Stacy Blackman sits down with Lisa, a fellow Penn undergrad who’s now the founder and CEO of Gradvantage, which helps college students and recent grads find professional direction. Lisa explains why the most valuable parts of business school had little to do with her classroom studies, and how her time at Wharton and the Lauder Institute shaped everything that came next.

Stacy Blackman and Lisa Tretler on B-Schooled podcast episode 308.

A year or two into her post-MBA consulting job, Lisa wanted more control over her time. She struck out on her own, first advising women entrepreneurs and then launching several for-profit and nonprofit ventures. Along the way, a TA role in Wharton’s Global Consulting Practicum grew into two decades of teaching entrepreneurship and business skills at Iona University, Columbia University, and Wharton.

The second half of the conversation gets practical. Lisa walks through the career mistakes she sees most often, both before and during business school, and shares her approach to networking for anyone who, like Stacy, has ever felt allergic to name tags. She also has targeted advice for MBA students chasing finance or consulting jobs, and for those still figuring out where they’re headed.
