Wharton Launches MBA in Artificial Intelligence for Business

MBA in artificial intelligence

New AI-focused MBA concentration prepares students to lead at the intersection of technology, strategy, and ethics.

The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School has introduced a new MBA major and undergraduate concentration in Artificial Intelligence for Business, starting in Fall 2025. This new program gives students the tools to lead in a world where AI increasingly shapes business decisions.

Dean Erika James put it simply: “It is no longer a question of if, but how artificial intelligence will fundamentally alter every aspect of business and society.” With this MBA in artificial intelligence major, Wharton positions itself to guide students through both the promise and risks of AI.

Courses That Blend Technical Skill and Business Strategy

The new AI for Business major includes applied machine learning, data science, neuroscience, statistics, and data engineering. Students must also complete Big Data, Big Responsibilities: Toward Accountable Artificial Intelligence, taught by Professor Kevin Werbach, director of Wharton’s Accountable AI Lab.

Wharton’s Statistics and Data Science and Operations, Information and Decisions (OID) departments will jointly oversee the program. Professors Prasanna (Sonny) Tambe and Giles Hooker will serve as faculty advisors.

The Wharton AI and Analytics Initiative supports the program by aligning it closely with ongoing faculty research. As a result, students will learn from real-time data and case studies that reflect the current AI landscape.

Business Schools Are Moving Fast. So Should You.

This launch comes at a critical moment. Companies across sectors are hiring but can’t find enough candidates with strong AI expertise. As Vice Dean Eric Bradlow noted, “We are at a critical turning point where practical AI knowledge is urgently needed.”

Wharton’s move is part of a broader trend. Top MBA programs are racing to update their offerings to meet demand in analytics, automation, and AI governance. That means prospective students need to think more strategically about how their goals align with this shift.
