B-Schooled Podcast Episode #292: Biggest Test Prep Mistakes
Most people preparing for the GMAT or GRE make the same early mistakes without realizing it, and those missteps can quietly cost them weeks of wasted study time. In this episode of B-Schooled, Stacy sits down with SBC Director of Test Prep Anthony Ritz to break down the study fails he sees most often, and how to avoid them.
The biggest one: starting too late. Anthony says he regularly hears from students two weeks out from a test date who haven’t opened a book yet, when a proper prep timeline runs closer to two to three months. But timing is only the start. Anthony also digs into how students study once they do get going, and it’s often the wrong way. A lot of applicants grind through pile after pile of random practice questions instead of drilling one narrow topic until it clicks. As Anthony puts it:
“You want to be studying until you can’t do the problem wrong, until it feels so automatic that it’s totally inconceivable that you’d ever miss it.”
He also flags the trap of reviewing missed questions too quickly, nodding along at the right answer without asking why the mistake happened in the first place. And he’s blunt about the cost of burning through official practice tests too early— there are only a handful, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Anthony closes with a fail that has nothing to do with content at all: ignoring the mental side of test day. Some level of nerves is normal, but real test anxiety, the kind that tanks a score between practice and the real thing, is worth addressing directly rather than trying to study your way past it.
