The 2025 US News MBA Rankings Are Here

US News MBA rankings

Every spring, the MBA admissions world collectively clutches its pearls as U.S. News & World Report drops its annual full-time MBA rankings. Like it or loathe it (and most schools feel a bit of both), these rankings influence perceptions, donor interest, and yes—applicant behavior.

According to the 2025 U.S. News MBA rankings, Wharton now stands alone at #1, after sharing the throne with Stanford GSB last year. Stanford drops into a tie with Kellogg School of Management at #2, and that little shuffle has people talking. Why? Because Kellogg isn’t just climbing in the full-time MBA rankings—it also tied for first in the part-time MBA category, alongside Chicago Booth and UC Berkeley Haas. Quietly and methodically, Kellogg is having a moment.

Same players, slightly reshuffled deck. But look closer, and you’ll see some interesting signals.

What’s Behind the US News MBA Rankings Shakeups?

U.S. News assigns heavy weight—50%—to post-MBA compensation and job placement. The rest of the score comes from a mix of admissions selectivity, peer and recruiter surveys, and academic performance metrics.

And this is where Harvard’s ranking starts to wobble. HBS grads now earn $15,000 less on average than their Stanford peers ($172,342 vs. $187,504), and their employment rate at three months post-grad sits at just 76.9%—one of the lowest in the Top 10. Meanwhile, Tuck is out here placing 88.6% of its grads.

This doesn’t mean Harvard’s value has tanked. It means the metrics that U.S. News chooses to highlight don’t tell the whole story. Yield? Endowment? Fellowship support? Not included. But if they were, HBS would still dominate. (No school hands out more fellowship money.)

Should You Trust These Rankings?

Rankings like these merely offer a snapshot in time. While they’re informative, MBA applicants should take them with a grain of salt.

According to a Poets & Quants survey of business school deans, 75% believe U.S. News holds the most sway over public perception of MBA quality—more than Financial Times or Businessweek. But that doesn’t mean they trust it unconditionally.

To its credit, U.S. News did make tweaks this year—incorporating both classic and Focus Edition GMAT scores and tossing out each school’s top two and bottom two peer ratings to reduce bias. However, until the rankings start reflecting how students actually choose programs, their utility will remain limited.

The Bottom Line for Applicants

Use the rankings as a starting point, not a compass. Wharton’s #1? Great. But does it fit your career goals, learning style, and vision for the future?

ROI is personal. Prestige is only one part of the equation. And the best MBA program for you isn’t necessarily the one on top—it’s the one that gets you where you want to go.
